The end of the SD Card line?
SD Cards, have they really stopped making them?
Yeah, I know.. You’re probably thinking, what the hell are you talking about Rod, you can get SD cards all over the place. Shirley they’ve not just stopped.. Well.. current availability says maybe they have..
You see, not all SD Cards are the same, some are fast, some are slow, some are big, some are small.. But more importantly than that, some don’t support the ‘legacy modes’ like MMC and modes below class 4 (SDSC/HC). This is all down the the simple fact that the market wants super fast super big SD’s. Not many people still SD cards that format to FAT let alone FAT16 or FAT32. And even more so at bogo speeds!
Anywho, the long and the short of it is.. the type of cards that many ‘Retro’ devices use are getting fewer and far between (new obvs). SD Cards that I used to pay £1.80-4.00 now cost, wait for it.. £16.00 And you can only buy a couple at a time!
And for those of you that aren’t so deep into how many ‘retro’ devices ‘work’ Many of them still think they are attached to a HDD, or FDD with only the most basic conversion of protocols, or simply just wing’ing it at fixed speeds.
The good news is it’s time to look behind your fridge for that 2GB SD you lost 10 years ago, give it a couple of years, you’ll get One Million pounds for it on the ebay’s! So that’s something to look forward too ;D
The bad news is, I’ll have to start putting the prices up on ‘Full Sized’ SD cards as time moves on and cost prices go up. But at least if you buy your SD Cards from www.tfw8b.com you know they’ll work with your 8bit things, coz one thing is for sure, that £15.00 256gb one won’t!
(FYI.. Most Micro SD based 8bit things aren’t massively a problem. ie The Kung-Fu-Flash (but u still ‘currently’ get one for free with my KFF’s btw so you you’ve no need to worry anyway’).. but don’t expect most, if not all Micro SD’s to work as full sized coz many of those only support the modern modes)
